Workshop title |
Economic, Social, and Cultural Transitions in Upper Silesia: A Region in Transformation |
ECTS |
3 |
Activities |
This Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) explores the multifaceted transformation of Upper Silesia — a region shaped by its unique position as a borderland and its industrial heritage. Known for its historical reliance on heavy industries, including coal mining and steel production, Upper Silesia has undergone significant social, cultural, and economic shifts over time. The programme examines how the legacy of heavy industry has influenced regional identity, community dynamics, and economic structures, while also addressing the challenges and opportunities of contemporary transitions. By analyzing both historical and current perspectives, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors driving change in the region, as labour market adaptation, social mobility, and poverty in post-industrial areas, alongside cultural and identity-related shifts within mining communities. |
