Course description
The aim of the course is to discuss the phenomenon of travel and to analyze its origins, modes, and characteristics. Various travel accounts will be interpreted using methodologies from travel studies writing. Through the proposed analyses, the underlying patterns shaping contemporary (mass) tourism will be revealed, with the goal of fostering a more responsible attitude toward this phenomenon.
The following topics will be addressed:
1. The origins of contemporary tourism
2. Travel guides.
3. Intercultural communication for travel purposes.
4. Photography.
5. Tastes of the world.
6. Travelling ‘I’.
7. Encounters with ‘the Other’.
8. Tourist attractions.
9. Contemporary travelogues across different media.
10. Marketing the world.
Evaluation:
Assessed elements: class participation (50% of the final score) + presentation (50% of the final score)
